Seven Lamar CISD "mathletes" journeyed to Chicago to take part in the nation's most prestigious math competition. One, Arshaan Ali, a junior at George Ranch High School, earned a Gold medal with the second highest score among all of the juniors attending the event.
MathCON is a prestigious academic competition hosted every year by Concept Schools. Approximately, 50,000 students nationwide competed in the online round of MathCON this year and the top 1 percent (576 students) were invited to the MathCON finals at the University of Illinois Chicago on April 22.
Eight Lamar CISD students were in the top 1 percent and seven made the trip to Chicago to take the final written exam. Students had 80 minutes to complete 50 challenging math problems spanning across several mathematical disciplines: algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis, number systems and pre-calculus. Medals were awarded to the top performers in each grade level.
Earning honorable mentions at the competition were:
Ryon Middle School sixth-grader Zaina Ali, who is Arshaan's sister;
Reading Junior High eighth-graders Millan Misra and Stefan Pham; and
George Ranch senior Alexander Stockman.
Lamar Consolidated High School junior Haily Arteaga and Foster High School freshman Meggie Wang were also in the one percent of the nation's math wiz's that made the trip to Chicago.
We are incredibly proud when any of our students earn recognition for their accomplishments, and we are so excited seven of our students proudly represented Lamar CISD in the finals," said Katie Marchena-Roldan, the District's Math Coordinator. "The (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) field is such an important part of the future, and we actively encourage our teachers and students to find fun ways to use STEM inside and outside of the classroom."
