KHOU's Christina Kooker, Tierra Shirley, Brittany Grahm, Principal Dr. Karen Mumphord, Kimberly Moeller and her son, Marshall, celebrate Ms. Shirley.
On Wednesday, April 24, Dickinson Elementary School’s Tierra Shirley was surprised in her classroom by KHOU as she was presented with the Red Apple Award. The award is presented monthly to a Houston area teacher that makes a difference in their community. Sponsored by Great Day Houston and Ashley HomeStore, the Red Apple Award gives an extra opportunity to celebrate the individuals that make a tremendous impact in the lives of their students.
Shirley was nominated by Kimberly Moeller, the mother of one of her students. “Ms. Shirley is the one who comes up with strategies to help those students who would have been written off most other places,” said Moeller. “She has completely turned around what started out as a very difficult year for us and has made all of the difference in our lives.”
Ms. Shirley leads Dickinson Elementary’s Positive Approach to Student Success (PASS) program. She is credited for being quick on her feet and showing the upmost compassion as she guides the students who often have tough behavioral issues.
On top of surprising and celebrating Ms. Shirley, Ashley HomeStore chose to acknowledge all the difference makers at Dickinson Elementary School by presenting the school with a $2,500 check to Ashley HomeStore. Additionally, Shirley was presented with a $250 Visa Gift Card.
