The Hubenak Husky Library Hello!

Welcome to the Hubenak Husky Library. My name is Kimberly Moats. I am your school librarian and media specialist. My teaching experience spans over 23 years; 16 as a librarian. Before that, I was a classroom teacher. I have earned three degrees including a Master’s in Library Science and hold several certifications through the State of Texas.

The library has an additional awesome team member, Ms. Buena. She has served the students and staff members at Hubenak for several years.

The mission of the Lamar Consolidated ISD Libraries is to create a physical and digital environment in which our students, staff, and community can strengthen their natural inquisitive nature, foster a love of reading, and serve as a collaborative resource for teachers and staff in developing powerful learning experiences across all curricular areas.

Goals and Mission:

It is the goal and vision of Hubenak's Library Media Program to:

provide an attractive, welcoming environment.
provide a well-organized and comprehensive collection that meets the needs of the faculty and student body.
encourage collaboration between the media specialist and faculty to integrate information, media literacy, and technology skills into all curricular areas.
maintain a collection that is continually assessed and plan steps for changes and improvements.
insure that the media program and its services are meeting the needs of students and the faculty.

Library Hours, Student Checkouts and Classes

6:40 a.m. to 7:05 a.m.
The library is open each morning for quick book exchanges during 6:40 a.m. to 7:05 a.m.

7:30 a.m. to 2:30p.m.
This year the library is on an eight day rotation with the Special's Classes. Students come to the library every eight days for literacy-based lessons and the opportunity to check-out books. Kindergarten students may borrow one book during each rotation. First through fifth grade students may choose two books.

As with any library, students must return their books in good condition in order receive others. If you believe your child has lost a book or one has become damaged, please contact the library.

Good Practices:

1. Given the library classes are on a rotation, your child's library class will not have a set day. It is encouraged that students keep and return their library books to their back packs after each use, so they will be available for an exchange or renewal during their next visit. This will also help to alleviate books being lost.

2. Please do not eat or drink while reading a Hubenak library book.

3. Please do not write or draw in a Hubenak library book.

Library Activities

Library Clubs:
The library sponsors two clubs that are open to select 5th grade students who have a heart to help others and lead.
1. The News Crew: Students in the News Crew learn how to operate the equipment in the Hubenak News Studio to produce a live broadcast each morning. This broadcast aims to inform students and staff of current and upcoming events as well as pertinent information necessary for everyone's success.
2. V.I.S.A.: (Very Important Student Assistants): Students in the V.I.S.A. program help out in the library each morning from 7:00 to 7:25. They assist with a variety of tasks set forth by Mrs. Moats or Mrs. Buena.

Library Book Fairs:

The library hosts two book fairs each year. One in the fall and one in the spring. The proceeds from these book fairs help to buy books and pay for special author visits and programs.

Reading Programs:

The library sponsors various voluntary reading programs throughout the school year, such as the Texas Bluebonnet Reading Program for third through fifth grade students and Raz Kids Reading Program for those younger. This year we have a District-wide reading program through Beanstack. This reading program is open to all students. It's easy to do. Everyday, after reading, students should click into BEANSTACK located on the ClassLink platform and log how many minutes they read. The district's goal is 10,000 minutes with all campuses combines. A letter competition never hurt anyone, so the district is tracking the minutes that each campus reads to share and compare. Volunteers

Library volunteers are an essential and valuable part of our library program. They help in the shelving of our library books, and keeping the library shelves straightened, as well as setting up for our fall and spring book fairs, and more. Thank you so much for your support.
